Alex Levac: Black Box
The first comprehensive museum solo exhibition devoted to Alex Levac ( b. 1944), one of Israel’s most prominent and influential photographers, the exhibition seeks to tell the intertwined story of a photographer and a place through the images that have come to define them both.
From his early years in London, through his work in Brazil, to his return to Israel in 1981, the exhibition traces the formation of Levac’s singular photographic vision. It reveals how his distinctive eye evolved into one of the most recognizable voices in Israeli photography.
For more than four decades, Levac has chronicled Israel’s defining historical moments alongside the quiet drama of everyday life. Walking the delicate line between witness and artist, his photographs capture the extraordinary within the ordinary, balancing compassion with irony and horror with empathy. Beyond their remarkable documentary value, they offer an enduring portrait of the Israeli society in all its diversity and contradictions—often anticipating coexistence and humanism that lie at the heart of contemporary conversations about Israel today.
