How to Say How to Say More with Less? / A Symposium accompanying the exhibition Noma Bar: Look Again
Whether creating a commissioned work for a global corporation or pursuing a personal project, the iconic images Noma Bar has created over the past 25 years inspire wonder and continue to surprise. This is thanks to his distinctive visual language, which enables him to tell an entire story with remarkable simplicity: through formal reduction, a sophisticated interplay between positive and negative space, and the merging of two or more images within a single composition, Bar distills complex ideas into images that are sharp, surprising, and unforgettable.
This special evening expands the idea of reduction beyond the world of illustration and into other fields, moving between different formats and scales. A lecture by Bar will trace his creative process; a series of short talks will explore selected subjects, including the micro-dramas that dominate our social media feeds, exceptionally small-scale urban architecture, and microcopy in apps; a debate spanning fashion, art, social media, design, and writing will settle, once and for all, the question of which is better—more or less?—and more.
The evening will conclude with Ari Teperberg’s Untitled Document—a 70-minute solo performance unfolding entirely within a Google Docs document. With a perspective at once playful and poignant, Teperberg weaves an intricate and moving web of connections between voice, identity, technology, communication, memory, and loss, as he navigates across the internet and deep into his memory in search of forgotten voices, stories, and discoveries.
