Auction / Special Event Inspired by the Exhibition Tom Wesselmann: All Out / From the Marie and Jose Mugrabi Collection

The exhibition Tom Wesselmann: All Out celebrates the sexual liberation of 1960s America and its encounter with consumer culture. Just as consumer goods became increasingly available and accessible to all, the sexual revolution sought to make pleasure accessible to everyone.

Nearly sixty years later, both of these cultural forces have taken a darker turn. Excessive consumption has placed an unprecedented strain on the planet’s resources. Sexual liberation has given way to a new conservatism, while at the same time, platforms have emerged that allow anyone to turn their body—and their self-image—into a commodity.

In this auction, five speakers will put parts of their bodies up for sale, and audience members will be invited to bid on them. Some will attempt to sell the parts they consider most precious and valuable; others, precisely those they most long to be rid of.

Beyond its provocative premise, the event reopens the question of who is permitted to sell the body, under what conditions, and whether we have any real control over its commercial value.

The event returns to the charged encounter between consumerism and the body—two sources of desire, pleasure, and value.
