On Teaching / The Voice and the Text in the Educational Work of Elie Shamir
A unique event marking the launch of Elie Shamir’s book, The Voice and the Text. The book delves into the artist’s approach to teaching art, both at a practical and a theoretical level, which he developed over many years of teaching. The event will feature colleagues, creative artists of various fields, and intellectuals who will shed new light on various aspects of the artist’s work. After the event, the documentary on Shamir’s work Lullaby for the Valley, directed by Ben Shani, will be screened.

10:00 Elie Shamir, The Voice and the Text | Elie Shamir is a senior Israeli painter and art teacher, and recipient of the 2005 Ministry of Education and Culture Award. He will discuss the principles of painting instruction he developed over the years.
10:45 Haim Be’er, Sitting Across from Elie Shamir | Haim Be’er is an Israeli author. In his lecture, he will share his personal experience as a model sitting for the artist.
11:00 Dina Zilber, A Workshop for Myth Correction | Dina Zilber is a senior attorney and former Deputy Attorney General. In her talk, she will offer fresh insights into Shamir’s work.
11:15 Doaa Bsis and Rei Raviv, Removing Cézanne From Your Shoulder | Doaa Bsis and Rei Raviv are active artists whose works have featured at various solo and group exhibitions in Israel and abroad. They will discuss the influence of Shamir’s unique teaching approach on their art. The panel will be moderated by Dalit Matatyahu, Curator of the Israeli Art Department at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
11:45 Yoni Rechter, short musical performance | Yoni Rechter is a musician, singer, composer, producer, and musical arranger. As a friend of Shamir’s, he arranged and performed the theme song for the film about the artist.
12:00 Break
12:30 Screening of the documentary film about Elie Shamir, Lullaby for the Valley (Ben Shani, 2020, 75 minutes, Hebrew, with Hebrew subtitles). The screening will be preceded by an introduction by the film’s director, Ben Shani.
The event will be hosted by Galit Landau-Epstein, Associate Curator for Contemporary Art at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
