The Collection, 2004 | Dir. Ayelet Dekel | Israel | Hebrew with English subtitles | 55 minutes
Film introduction: Roni Cohen-Binyamini, Curator of the Phoenix Collection
The documentary film tells the story of the Israeli art collection of The Phoenix, considered one of the most important collections of Israeli painting of all time. The collection was established in the early 1970s at the initiative of Joseph Hackmey, who was then the owner and CEO of the Phoenix insurance company. Hackmey, a brilliant and driven art collector, developed a deep commitment and fierce enthusiasm for Israeli art, transforming what began as a private passion into a lifelong mission.
The Phoenix Collection includes many of the artistic high points from the various movements in Israeli painting—featuring inspiring works by Israeli artists who have worked here from the founding of the state to the present day.
